Will Patton - Latitudes and Departures
Reviewed by Ken Cartwright

Vermont: Fresh air, maple syrup, Woodstock cheese, lots of old-time and Celtic music and the home of the producer of some the freshest, sweetest mandolin playing this side of any jazz club in the world.

Yeah, I said Jazz! Latitudes and Departures by Will Patton of Vermont was brought to my attention via Mandolin Cafe. On one of my frequent visits to this great site I saw an advertisement for Will's CD. I spoke with several people who had heard it and they suggested that if I liked jazz, that I should check this CD out. About the same time, Mandolin Magazine received a review copy from Will Patton.

Patton delicately and sensitively plays intricate melodies with purity and clarity of tone. Of the 11 long pieces on this CD, five are written by Will Patton.

This mostly instrumental album is easy-listening with the perfect balance of guitar by great and tasty players like Steve Blair and Andre Maquera and the mandolin master himself, Will Patton, who also plays mandola, string bass, keyboard. Also appearing on this album is Dave Gusakov on violin, Steve Wienert on drums, Mark Lavoie on harmonica, Rich Davidian on flute and Skeeter Camera on Percussion.

Any time I see a CD with Fats Waller's Jitterbug Waltz, I have to listen as it's one of my all-time favorites pieces. This rendition is now the new standard for me. Will's version is very tasty.

The one vocal on the CD, Chasin' A Dream is penned by Patton and is so good. It features the mysterious Spiders--that quintessential mystery backup-group from the northeast. Chasin' A Dream sounds like an old Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks tune and arrangement.

To me, the strength of Latitudes and Departures is the sparseness of overproduction and a strong understanding of Bosa Nova. This album, like Don Stiernberg's About Time project, is forever locked into rotation in my CD library. (WP102000--Will Patton 802-827-3845)

Song List: Wabash, Jitterbug Waltz, Butch & Butch, Solace, Summerhawk, Hoodoo, Choro Chorado Pra Parlinho Nogueira, Chasin' A Dream, Pepper, Samba De Orfeu, Ballade for Jessy.
